We make subsurface flow processes predictable.

We represent the partnership between mining and water. For the assessment, prediction, and well-founded decisions regarding flow processes in mining, we bring together process investigations, the necessary calculations, and technical implementation. We are interested in everything that flows and is stored in the subsurface.

For many years, we have been dedicated to investigating the flow processes of fluids as well as mass and energy transport in porous materials and rocks. Our goal is to understand complex subsurface processes and to create well-founded decision-making bases for mining, the environment, and the utilization of the geological subsurface.

INVESTIGATE

We determine the flow-related properties of rocks, construction materials, and sealing materials both in the laboratory and under real conditions on-site. Using innovative measurement technology, we define the descriptive material parameters of the flow space – permeabilities, porosities, pore size distributions, pressures – for minimal flow processes in salt rock formations and sealing structures, as well as maximum flow processes in drainage layers and aquifers.

CALCULATE

We combine the acquired measurement data with geological site information and flow-technical boundary conditions to create numerical models of the flow spaces. On this basis, we model and predict the flow processes of gases, liquids, and dissolved substances in small and large spaces over the required time horizons.

APPLY

We implement our knowledge of flow-related properties and processes in rocks and materials, model-based simulation and prediction of flow events, and mining expertise into engineering projects. Our key areas of focus include:

  • Conceptual design, positioning, dimensioning + material selection, implementation, and functional assessment of sealing structures in underground mining,
  • Analysis, balancing, simulation, and prediction of the water balance of mining heaps and landfills,
  • Conceptual design, dimensioning + material selection, implementation, and functional assessment of borehole seals for oil and gas extraction, cavern storage, geothermal energy, mining, and CO2 storage,
  • Subsurface storage of fluids and energy.

Our work bridges physical fundamentals and practical engineering. Every project expands our understanding of subsurface processes – because every new question or challenge delivers new insights.

Therefore, our long-standing principle remains: We never stop learning.
